Daughter of No Comment -- April 1997 |

A 19 year old young woman who was guilty of misusing a credit card
got the following advice from Common Pleas Judge Shirley Strickland
Saffold "Men are easy. You can go sit in the bus stop, put on a short
skirt, cross your legs and pick up 25. Ten of them will give you their
money. If you don't pick up the first 10, then all you got to do is open
your legs a little bit and cross them at the bottom and then they'll stop.'
She got boos from both mens and women's groups because she neatly insulted
everyone.
One person who made a difference is Carol Lees, a Canadian homemaker, who faced a fine or prison when she refused to fill out a census form because the definition of work didn't include household work or child care. Raising three children she knew she worked. As a result of her personal crusade the Canadian 1996 census asks about child care, housework and elder care. Bob Marks, associate director of the U.S. census says there are NO plans to include questions on unpaid household work in the next census in 2000. A Christian school in Memphis Tenn. didn't violate federal law when it fired an unmarried pregnant preschool teacher, a Sixth Circuit Judge ruled she was fired for having sex outside of marriage, not because she was pregnant. Under Title V!! of the Civil Rights Act employers can't discriminate based on pregnancy. In another case a federal court ruled that a Holiday Inn owner violated the law when it fired an employee who told co-workers she was considering an abortion. A report which evaluated over 1,700 articles found that girls today are 15 times more likely then their mothers to begin using illegal drugs by age 15. The lifelong risk to their health will be severe and the social cost will be very high. A study by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society found that 9 out of 10 women are currently wearing shoes that are too small, 8 out of 10 women say their shoes are painful, 7 out of 10 women have developed a bunion, hammertoe or other painful foot deformity, 9 times more women then men are likely to develop foot problems because of shoes that fit improperly and finally that 9 out 10 women's foot deformities can be attributed to tight shoes. Women need to be uncompromising. Don't spend your money if you don't get what you want. Liberate your feet. The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Come. wants the American Psychiatric Assoc. to remove the diagnosis of "Gender Identity Disorder" from the diagnostic manual of mental disorders. Symptoms in girls include "intense negative reactions to parental expectations or attempts to have them wear dresses or other feminine attire." Problem behavior also included a preference for boys' clothing and short hair and little girls had also better not like Batman or Superman. Daughter is agast that the good old American tomboy is a medical problem. She thinks the shrinks should take on serial rapists and leave little girls free to be themselves. A survey by the National Foundation for Women Business Owners found that 78% of women business owners spent some time volunteering compared to 48% of all adults. Sixty % also encourage their employees to volunteer and 12% provide financial incentives. Women are leaders in social responsibility and giving back to their communities. Catalyst, a women's research group says that 33% of Fortune 500 companies now have at least two women directors up from 28% a year ago. It seems that when there is one it is easier to get two as many businesses seem to have moved away from the token representation that was so prevalent in the very recent past. When you get your annual report from a company in which you own stock, count the women directors and if you are not pleased be sure to let the president of the company know. Remember stockholders are owners. Although 75% of migraine sufferers are women very little time and money has been spent in research because until fairly recently headache was attributed by some to a woman's unfulfilled desire to have children. "It's been perceived as a woman's neurotic condition," says Charles Hardcastle who works for a major drug company, As we have an election coming up daughter found this comment on suffrage by former President Grover Cleveland . "This particular movement is so aggressive, and so extreme in its insistence, that those whom it has fully enlisted may well be considered as incorrigible." Since there are currently troglodytes out there who feel the same way about women's rights let us resolve to retire as many of them as we can now and keep working 'till we have won. The pregnancy rate for U.S. girls ages 15 to 19 rose to 95.5 per 1,000, up 9% in the last decade. The U.S. has the highest rate among developed countries, even tho all teens report similar rates of sexual experience. It should also be noted that violence and abuse of children is at epidemic levels. Women have to be more involved in mentoring young women to help them see they have options and choices that will affect their futures. We have our own Bay Watch here in Virginia, Bay Buchanan, Pat's junkyard dog sister on the abortion issue, has been exploring running for office from our lucky state. She is said to covet Robb's Senate seat which comes up in the year 2000 and she has been quoted as saying "Focus on Virginia, I mean we've got only four years to build a base." Stay tuned In May Bob Dole said "I thought we ought to have an equal rights amendment for men after I married Elizabeth," He really doesn't get it. An interesting comment from a recent conference of Commonwealth Attorneys on selecting juries in sexual assault cases. The idea is to strike (excuse) women jurors first because it is felt they are more likely to blame the victim. Do some women hold other women to higher standards then they do men? Newspaper columnist Mary McGrory took a swipe at us recently when she said "Militant feminists are like the NRA: They fight like steers against sensible prohibitions in regard to guns and abortion, respectively. Daughter finds her comparison misplaced and stupid. Family Values Explained. Florida state lawmaker Marvin Couch, a Republican, married with 6 kids, has resigned after being caught buying sex from a prostitute in a shopping center parking lot. He had a perfect rating from The Christian Coalition of Florida. The Olympics was Title 1X at work. Like all legislative rights it can be eroded by the legislative body that granted it. We need to vote so that the rights we have secured remain in place so we can use our money and energy in the fight to reach equal opportunity in other areas. | |
