Alexandria Hospital recently had a gala to benefit the Emergency Room. Among the silent auction items of "fabulous, fantastic and fun" things was a face lift including the anesthetic charges. A recent ad for cosmetic surgery called it "achieving aesthetic excellence." A disgusted doctor contributed this item.

Bill Koch, a risk taking multi-millionaire, is sponsoring the first all women's team for the 142 year old Americas Cup -- a world class sailboat race. He said, "These women are going to make history. They are going to show that with a fast boat, a good attitude and teamwork, they can beat the men and the old tradition of sailing. Four hundred women applied.

Ladislaw Antalik, N.C. killed two former co-workers at Litespec, Inc. before killing himself. One of them had filed a sexual harassment complaint against him.

A study by the Center for Creative Leadership in N.C. suggests the "glass ceiling" keeping women from top company posts exists, in part because women are not given responsibility early on and the rationale is chivalry!! In an effort to protect women, hiring managers do not give women the same challenges as men.

In April the Montana Legislature passed an animal abuse law that increased the penalty for a 2nd conviction to 2 years in prison and a $1,000 fine. The state's maximum penalty for second offense wife beating is 6 months in jail and $500.

52% of U.S. couples will be stung by a 1994 tax law quirk known as the "marriage tax." They will pay a average of $1,244 more than if they were single and living together. The feds seem to be pro tax and anti-marriage.

Vassar College was found to have violated sex discrimination laws when it denied tenure to biologist Dr. Cynthia J. Fisher because she was married. In the last 30 years no married woman in the "hard sciences" had been granted tenure. The belief was that only women who remain single could be fully devoted to the sciences and that being married was considered synonymous with child rearing obligations.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics finds that in the last 20 years the rate of violent crime against men was dropped sharply. The rate against women has remained steady.There are about 2.6 million violent crimes against women a year. Women aged 20-24, living in central cities are the most likely targets. In 1992, the latest figures available, 5,000 women and children died from domestic violence. Where a child is abused, 70% of the women are also abused.

Conservative author Charles Murray said, "A man has as much responsibility toward a child if he isn't married to the woman as a piece of chocolate has if a woman gains weight."

Two recent phone calls to daughter's house have started out, "Is this the lady of the house?" Daughter will award a prize for the best response.

The Pro-Line Cap Co. of Fort Worth was cited for not having adequate rest room facilities for its women employees. Rather than provide them, the company fired its 30 women workers. An EEOC complaint has been filed.

Michael Smith, co-winner of the 1993 Nobel prize in chemistry, is giving 1/4 of his $500,000 prize to the Canadian Society for Women in Science and Technology. The Canadian Government will match his gift. Truly a noble gift from a Nobel winner.

Molly Ivins tells this story. A Texas politician, late to a meeting, used as his excuse that he had seen a very jiggly, wiggly, bouncy, curvy woman walking along and he had to go around the block so he could see her again. At this point Texas Governor Ann Richards said, "Well, girls, have you seen any good dicks lately?" In 1993 44% of real estate brokers were women, more than twice the percent 5 years ago, but their average income was $34,900, almost $10,000 less than their male counterparts, says the National Association of Realtors.

The National Association of Women Business Owners has formed an "angels network" to help provide business loans and mentoring help to their 5000 members. The 10 best cities for women business owners were Boston; New York; Colombus, OH; San Francisco; Philadelphia; Chicago; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Baltimore; and San Diego says Working Woman Magazine.
